What is a HEPA filter and how it works?

HEPA (High-efficiency particulate air) filter is a type of mechanical air filter that traps harmful particles like pollen, viruses, bacteria, and mold. A HEPA filter is a highly proficient filter that typically captures over 99.5% of all particulate pollution. It is made from either plastic (PP+PET) or fiberglass. The HEPA filter was developed in the early 1940s and used first by the Manhattan Project to contain the spread of airborne radioactive contaminants. There is nothing safer than the HEPA filter when we talk about filtering air.

How does the HEPA filter work?

A HEPA filter works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles and dust. As particles cross the HEPA filter web, they are taken out of circulation in the following ways:

  • Direct Impaction
  • Sieving
  • Interception
  • Diffusion

What happens to particles when they enter the HEPA filter?

A HEPA filter is one of the best solutions for removing dust and pollutants from the air. They are designed to control the number of particles entering a clean area by filtration. Below is the image of dust filtration by a HEPA filter-

Here are some of the Pros of HEPA filter-

  • High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can clean circulated air.
  • The HEPA filters can remove 99.97% dust.
  • They keep dust away from lungs.
